The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet has helped many people throughout the years get rid of the extra unwanted pounds. Even though there isn't one single Mediterranean diet, as that part of the world includes many countries, the diets of that region are very similar. Many researchers have reached the conclusion that the Mediterranean diet or diets are much healthier than the average U.S. diet.

Olive oil is the main fat used for cooking as well as flavoring the foods. That is the major reason the diet is high in mono-unsaturated fats. Many studies have proved that those unsaturated fats can lower the bad cholesterol (LDL) while raising the good cholesterol (HDL). Thus, lowering the risk of heart disease.

Meats, poultry and eggs are not eaten daily (a few times a week for poultry and eggs, and a few times a month for meat). Sweets are usually eaten on occasions and they are not a main part of the diet. Therefore, the consumption of saturated fats and refined sugars is minimal making the diet healthier than others.

Grains are the main part of the Mediterranean diet. Beans and other legumes such as lentils and chickpeas, as well as pasta, bread and wheat products such as bulgur are eaten on daily basis. Dairy products like cheese and yogurt (known to help the digestive system by increasing the good bacteria in our systems) along with fruits and vegetables are also consumed daily. That makes the diet rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Critics advice people to stay away from that diet due to the fact that roughly about 35% to 40% of the total energy of such diet is produced from fat. On the other hand, supporters (armed with the results of many researches which proved that people consuming a Mediterranean diet have a significantly reduced risk of repeated heart attacks) say that even though that fact is true, the fat or at least most of it is the healthier kind of fat that supports health and help combat diseases especially cardiovascular diseases.

In conclusion, the Mediterranean diet is considered by many as one of the healthiest diets due to the fact that it includes more grains, fruits and vegetables, and less meat, poultry and sweets. Thus, reducing the risk of heart disease as well as certain types pf cancer. Keep in mind that you need to check with a specialist before starting any kind of diet, due to the fact that we are different and what might be beneficial for some one else might not be beneficial for you and vice versa.
